• Summarizing and Note Taking

There are several methods for good summarizing and note taking. Students must be able to figure out what is and isn't important in their notes. In order to do this, students must write down only the important information as well as not add anything that they already know. In case a student has already added information that is unnecessary, simply delete it and keep the information brief. Students must keep the information structured as to easily be able to look back at the information easily and effectively. Notes should be lengthy but to the point, and teachers are encouraged to share their notes with students. Notes should also be able to be used as a study guide for tests. This keeps the student on track for taking the information that is most important.

Recommendations for the best note taking strategy include:

Deleting unimportant and overused information.

Keep the words understandable.
Try to have a topic sentence.
Summary frames keep the information orderly and include narrative, topic-restriction, illustration, definition, argumentation, problem/solution, and conversations frame.
Summarize notes.
Think of questions while note taking.
Clarify the information given.
Predict what information may be most viable.

As seen in the video, everyone is a natural summarizer. The video gives a great idea of summarizing using the squirrel example. Everyone adds ideas by thinking of what makes the most sense. Therefore all you need is the most important parts when note taking. Questions using summary frames is a great way for students to learn what is the most important information. The questions must make sense and not seem like busy work. Some great note taking strategies include outlines, webs, and combination notes. This helps students find out what style is easiest for them to do. When letting students see your own notes, explain how you made the notes and what parts are the most important. Notes must be reviewed for them to be useful, as just writing down the information won't be as helpful.
